Now You Can Include Your Pets in Your Will

Would you consider your pet part of your family? For many of us the answer is yes without hesitation. Animals have a very special impact in our lives. We make room for them in our beds, include them in family portraits, get comfort just by seeing or touching them and confide in them knowing very well they would never reveal our deepest secrets (unless you have a parrot maybe). Not only are pets awesome, they don’t judge or criticise us and totally accept us for who we are.

As responsible pet owners we provide them with the necessary things they need to survive and thrive, like water, food and shelter, hugs, play and companionship. As part of the family it stands to reason that many of us want to make sure our little buddies are looked after if we weren’t around to do it ourselves.

As important as our pets are to us imagine how important you are to them, that’s why making formal arrangements becomes one of the most thoughtful things you can do.

Due to the growing trend of people wanting to include their pets in their Wills and because the Footprint team are a bunch of animal lovers ourselves we decided it was time to add a dedicated section in our Will form to appoint a pet guardian.

Here are a few things to consider before selecting a guardian:

  • It’s obvious that you’ll want to pick someone you trust but it is really important that you discuss your intentions beforehand and agree on the arrangement

  • Leave money for your pet – while you can’t directly leave them any money, you can leave funds to the guardian supported with guidelines on how it is to be used

  • Leave instructions - write your care instructions including their favourite toy, what to feed them and when, any specific behavioural traits, medical history records etc. (all of this could be safely stored together in your Footprint digital vault along with your Will).

Pets are just like our young children; they need daily care and would need immediate attention if ever something happened to their carers. Now it’s easier than ever to make sure they’re sorted. Get started today with a Footprint online Will.
